In the first four months of 2024, global conflict-related deaths reached 47,000. If this rate persists, 2024 could see the highest number of conflict deaths since the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
The Global Peace Index 2024 highlights a troubling trend: the world is becoming increasingly dangerous. With 56 active conflicts, the highest since World War II, and 92 countries engaged in conflicts beyond their borders, the risk of major global conflicts is escalating.
Compare that to 2023, when there were 162,000 conflict-related deaths, the second-highest in 30 years. Conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza accounted for nearly 75% of these deaths.
The Global Peace Index (GPI) is a composite measure of countries’ peacefulness. It utilizes 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators, each weighted on a scale of 1 to 5. Lower scores indicate higher levels of peace. Key indicators include perceived criminality in society, security officers and police, homicides, jailed population, access to weapons, and internal organized conflict. Additional factors are political instability, violent crime, and military expenditure, among others.
Despite these worrying trends, some countries have managed to maintain or even improve their peacefulness. Here are the top 10 most peaceful countries in 2024, according to the Global Peace Index.
Iceland
Iceland leads the list with its strong social cohesion, low crime rates, and minimal military presence. Although it is the only NATO country without a standing military, Iceland is one of the founding member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“My people are unarmed and have been unarmed since the days of our Viking forefathers,” states Bjarni Benediktsson, Iceland’s Foreign Minister, in 1949. Although it no longer hosts a permanent foreign military presence since 2006, Iceland’s strategic importance for the safety of the North Atlantic remains significant.
