Vice President and presumptive presidential nominee Kamala Harris energized supporters in Atlanta on Tuesday, bringing the message of a revitalized Democratic presidential campaign to Georgia, a key battleground state.
Over 10,000 people gathered at the packed Georgia State arena to hear Harris speak about key issues such as immigration, the economy, and civil rights. Harris drew on her experience as a prosecutor, stating, “I know Donald Trump’s type. I have been dealing with people like him throughout my career.”
She highlighted her background prosecuting crimes like fraud and sexual abuse, which Trump has been found liable for or convicted of. Harris contrasted her experience with Trump’s alleged interference with a bipartisan border security bill, emphasizing that Trump prioritizes himself over border security.
Harris promised to revive the border security bill and sign it into law if elected president. Additionally, she addressed the high cost of living, vowing to focus on bolstering the middle class by addressing hidden fees, rent hikes, and prescription drug expenses.
Harris also committed to advancing protections for voting rights and reproductive freedoms, as well as tackling gun violence. She challenged Trump to commit to a pre-election debate, stating, “If you’ve got something to say, say it to my face.”
Georgia in Play
Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon revealed that while the campaign’s strategy was centered on winning Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, Georgia presented an opportunity to engage with new voters, particularly those who are Black, Latino, and under 30 years old.
In the 2020 election, Joe Biden narrowly won Georgia by less than half a percentage point. Trump and 18 co-defendants have been indicted by a Fulton County grand jury for their efforts to overturn the election results.
Trump announced plans to hold a rally in the same arena on Saturday.
