UCLA is officially joining the Big Ten, marking a significant milestone in the school’s athletic future. Athletic director Martin Jarmond and Chancellor Gene Block initiated the conversation in fall 2021, and after extensive preparation, UCLA is ready to celebrate its new conference membership on Friday. The transition includes various commemorative activities, such as a giant banner signing, alumni luncheon, and special football practice open to donors and academic leaders.
The Bruins will kick off their Big Ten journey with women’s soccer on Aug. 15 against Long Beach State, followed by their first conference games in September. Jarmond expressed his excitement for this historic day, highlighting the school’s dedication to both athletic success and the development of students.
Reflecting on the preparation for this move, Jarmond emphasized three main priorities: integrating UCLA into the Big Ten, ensuring fair scheduling for student-athletes, and involving all departments, staff, coaches, and student-athletes in the transition process. The school has also allocated additional support, including improvements in travel accommodations, academic support, mental health resources, and nutrition programs.
Looking ahead, Jarmond discussed the financial implications of the Big Ten move, potential revenue sharing, and the impact of the House settlement on UCLA athletics. He emphasized the importance of adapting to the changing landscape of college sports and expressed optimism about UCLA’s future in the Big Ten.
