Gusts of wind and sheets of rain tore through Billings Tuesday afternoon as a thunderstorm made its way across the region.
A cold front moving into the area brought with it powerful, 75 mph winds and brief, heavy rains. Some areas saw pellet-sized hailstones. Across town, wind gusts tore down tree limbs while rainwater poured sideways from walls and rooftops.
The National Weather Service issued a sever thunderstorm warning through 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and measured wind gusts at 76 mph at the Billings airport, strong enough to blow over a hangar under construction.
Motorists on North 27th Street moved tree limbs out of the roadway that had been blocking traffic.
In the Heights, residents reported nearly an inch of rain fell in the span of 15 minutes and the temperature dropped 25 degrees, moving from a summery 88 down to 63.
