Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 presidential election, as reported by the Associated Press.
The Associated Press states that Harris will announce Walz as her running mate at a rally on Tuesday evening (August 6) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This announcement follows Harris officially securing the Democratic nomination after a virtual roll call vote of the party’s delegates.
Walz, aged 60, is a former high school teacher and U.S. Army veteran who was elected as the governor in 2019. Known for unseating Republicans, he defeated a six-time incumbent in his congressional race and two Republican challengers in the gubernatorial race.
Considered a favorite among many Democrats, Walz’s down-to-earth communication style, quick wit, teaching background, and military service are seen as strengths that will benefit the party’s ticket.
Despite Minnesota not being a battleground state, Harris’s campaign hopes that Walz’s mid-western roots will resonate with voters in key states like Wisconsin and Michigan, crucial for the upcoming election.
During a recent White Dudes for Harris fundraiser, Walz remarked, “How often in 100 days do you get to change the trajectory of the world? How often in 100 days do you get to do something that’s going to impact generations to come? And how often in the world do you make that bastard wake up afterwards and know that a Black woman kicked his a**, sent him on the road?”
Democratic strategist Raghu Devaguptapu described Walz as “not the most charismatic guy, but he’s a steady hand. He’s really thoughtful, very likeable. He’s done a really nice job of building a broad coalition of support. … That’s the center of strength around Tim Walz.”
