The Federal Communications Commission is alerting college students to beware of back-to-school scams.
The FCC cautions that these scams may be more difficult to identify as they often look like legitimate fundraisers that aim to genuinely support students and parents.
Common scams targeting students include scholarship, technical support, roommate, and rental scams, as reported by the North Carolina Better Business Bureau.
In addition to receiving cold calls and robocalls, students on campus are also being targeted with deceptive emails and text messages that appear to be official, and there are fake scholarship offers circulating as well, according to the FCC.

The FCC stresses that students should never make loan payments over the phone and should avoid sharing personal information such as Social Security numbers, bank account and routing numbers, and credit and debit card numbers.
It is important to keep loan information confidential and secure as scammers often target students with loans. It is recommended to closely monitor financial records and account information.
The FCC also warns that these scams targeting students can occur at any time throughout the school year.
