The U.S. women’s basketball team clinched gold in the final event of the Paris Olympics against France, tying China for the most gold medals at 40.
The U.S. dominated the total medal count with 126, including 40 gold, 42 silver, and 44 bronze medals.
“I saw the medal count beforehand so I knew,” said U.S. women’s coach Cheryl Reeve, who felt the pressure to perform.
The U.S. lost a bronze medal due to a reallocation by the International Olympic Committee, with U.S. Olympic officials currently appealing the decision.

The U.S. has consistently topped the medal standings for eight consecutive Summer Games, with the last exception being at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
