ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Disney has bestowed “legends” status on 14 artists who have shaped the company, including Harrison Ford, Angela Bassett and Miley Cyrus. The company says Sunday’s honorees have had a “significant impact” on Disney’s legacy. The group also includes composer John Williams, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kelly Ripa, among others. The 14 new Disney Legends were inducted into Disney’s version of the hall of fame in a ceremony Sunday at The Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Ryan Seacrest hosted the show, which will be available Monday to stream on Disney+. Directors James Cameron and James L. Brooks were also honored.

Tom Cruise dropped from the top of Stade de France stadium in Paris before going on a conquest to the Hollywood sign. H.E.R. sang the U.S. naitonal anthem while gymnastics star Simone Biles and L.A. mayor Karen Bass. Los Angeles will host the Olympics for the third time, with previous Games being held there in 1984 and 1932. It will be the first time the city will host the Paralympics.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak early Monday. Astronomers say it’s one of the brightest and most easily visible showers of the year. This year’s peak activity coincides with a moon that is 44% full. More than 50 meteors should be visible per hour in rural areas away from city lights. Experts say the meteors will look like “fireballs” in the night sky. The Northern Hemisphere will have the best view. The Perseids last through Sept. 1. Multiple meteor showers occur annually and you don’t need special equipment to see them.
Jordan Chiles has been stripped of a gymnastics bronze medal, but the USOPC says it will appeal
PARIS (AP) — U.S. Olympic officials say they will appeal a court ruling that resulted in American gymnast Jordan Chiles being asked to return the bronze medal she won in the Paris Olympics floor exercise. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) voided an on-floor appeal by Chiles’ coach that vaulted her to third, saying the appeal came 4 seconds beyond the 1-minute time limit for scoring inquiries. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said Saturday night it would respect the court’s decision and elevate Barbosu to third. The International Olympic Committee confirmed the ruling Sunday, announcing that it was reallocating the bronze from last Monday’s women’s floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu.

Reynolds’ Marvel Studios smash “Deadpool & Wolverine” remained the top movie in North American theaters for the third straight week with $54.2 million in ticket sales according to studio estimates Sunday. Worldwide, it’s now surpassed $1 billion. “Deadpool & Wolverine,” though, was closely followed by “It Ends With Us,” the romance drama starring Lively, which surpassed expectations with a stellar $50 million debut. Together, the films created a kind of family edition of “Barbenheimer,” in which a pair of very different movies thrived in part due to counterprogramming. Only this time, the opposite movies were fronted by one of Hollywood’s most famous couples.
Large desert tortoise rescued from Arizona highway after escaping from ostrich ranch 3 miles away
PICACHO, Ariz. (AP) — State Department of Public Safety troopers recently helped rescue an escaped sulcata tortoise that was attempting to cross Interstate 10 near Picacho. The Arizona Republic reports that a motorist contacted authorities on July 30 to report a tortoise trying to cross the busy highway. The motorist and a DPS trooper managed to get the tortoise off the roadway unharmed and return it to its home — an ostrich ranch 3 miles away.
Browns’ plans for move to new dome stadium hits snag as county backs city’s renovation proposal
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns’ proposal to leave the lakefront and play in a new domed stadium in Cleveland’s suburbs has hit a major snag. In a letter sent to team owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, Cuyahoga County officials said they’re backing a proposed $1.2 billion renovation of the team’s current stadium and are committed to keeping the NFL franchise in downtown Cleveland “for generations to come.” Earlier this week, the team unveiled renderings for a $2.4 billion state-of-the-art stadium and entertainment complex to be built in Brook Park, Ohio. County officials argue a new stadium “does not make fiscal sense” and want the Browns to fix their current home, which opened in 1999. The city has offered $461 million toward that renovation.

World Boxing to announce major increase in membership after Paris in its bid to save Olympic boxing
PARIS (AP) — World Boxing expects to expand its membership base to more than 50 national federations in the weeks after the conclusion of the tumultuous Paris Olympics. Boris Van Der Vorst, the president of the organization, tells The Associated Press he is leaving Paris even more confident his sport can pull off “the greatest comeback story ever in the Olympic movement.” World Boxing is an alternative to the Russian-dominated International Boxing Association, which has been banished from the Olympic movement. Boxing is not currently on the program for the 2028 Olympics, and the International Olympic Committee has repeatedly said the sport must find a new governing body to be there.
