NEW YORK (AP) — They’re cute, space-efficient, and might even help with lawn maintenance without much effort.
A growing number of Americans are considering owning miniature cows, goats, donkeys, and other small farm animals. This trend is fueled by hobby farmers seeking easy-to-manage livestock and homesteaders interested in having a tiny pig or sheep as a pet.
Animal breeders have noticed an increase in sales of pint-sized farm animals since the COVID-19 pandemic, when more people began keeping backyard chickens for entertainment and fresh eggs. Like chickens, mini farm animals attract beginners looking for a taste of rural life.
Platforms like YouTube and TikTok have helped raise the popularity of mini farm animals, showcasing videos of adorable goats and miniature horses that garner millions of views. Martin Fysh, a vice president at rural lifestyle retailer Tractor Supply Co., credits these platforms for contributing to the trend.
While some individuals start with small farm animals as a stepping stone to larger ones, others are content with their mini livestock companions. For some, owning mini farm animals becomes a side hustle, offering tours, breeding animals, and sharing their experiences through blogs.
Before diving into mini farming, newcomers need to consider both the advantages and disadvantages, according to hobby farmers like Brian Gazda.
Mini goats
Brittany Snow, a high school English teacher in Florida, owns Nigerian Dwarf goats and appreciates the self-sustaining lifestyle they provide. Starting with four goats, her herd has since grown, expanding into dairy product production like cheese, soap, and lotion.
Mini goats are a popular choice for beginners. In the past year, animal breeders have registered a significant number of mini goats, indicating a surge in demand. However, taking care of mini goats can be challenging and costly, with rising animal feed prices and limited veterinary care posing obstacles.
Mini cows and donkeys
Mini cows can be both small and mighty, with some weighing up to 600 pounds. Social media stars like Allie Sine have showcased mini cows, experiencing a surge in both breeding and sales. Mini donkeys have also seen increased popularity, with breeders like Kim Furches reporting higher demand and prices.
New types of ‘exotic’ pets
Many individuals are attracted to mini animals for their uniqueness, seeking “exotic” pets like Southdown Babydoll sheep or miniature horses. These animals offer companionship and practical benefits like lawn maintenance, but owners should be prepared for the challenges that come with their care.
Miniature animals offer therapy
Some owners see therapeutic benefits in mini animals, using them in therapy programs for older individuals. Lisa Moad, owner of Seven Oaks Farm, uses miniature horses in therapy sessions, emphasizing their docile nature despite their size.
