BILLINGS — Some fairs in Montana, like those in Helena and Missoula, do not charge entry fees, which might leave guests wondering why MontanaFair in Billings has an entry fee.
“Why not just increase the wristband cost instead of requiring an entry fee and then walking to the ticket booth?” questioned Rowan Hackett while enjoying a fair corn dog.
Tim Goodridge, the assistant general manager of MetraPark, explained that the fair contributes approximately 30% of annual revenue to the venue.
“We have plans to enhance the grounds here, including outdoor arenas next year, maintenance, and replacing HVAC units on top of the building,” added Goodridge.
The regular entry fee for MontanaFair is $12, which may pose a burden for families with multiple members attending the fair, considering the costs of food, games, and rides inside.
“The price is a bit high,” commented Berry Bergen, a senior day attendee who had his admission waived. “But you have to make money somehow.”
Goodridge mentioned that his team has taken into account the community’s financial constraints, which is why they have various discounted days. He also highlighted that the entry fee provides a “controlled environment” for safety and accurate attendance tracking.
“You could enjoy numerous free activities like live music, acrobatic dogs, and other roaming entertainment without spending an extra dime,” emphasized Goodridge.
Hackett acknowledged that he believes the fair experiences are worth the cost.
