I was somewhat shocked to read the recent letter to the editor by Don Kaltschmidt.
He seems like a pretty good fit for the new damaged Republican Party. Extremely naive, short on empathy, and not very good at making predictions.
He asks Montana to vote Trump-Vance. He is writing the letter to Republicans, Democrats, and the “not politically involved.”
He begins by writing about the recent shooting which occurred in Pennsylvania. He claims we all remember where we were when this event happened. Well, not quite all of us. I remember what I had for breakfast on Nov. 22, 1963. That was about 61 years ago. I was in the service working at West Point and it truly was an historic moment that is still remembered.
Today I am not exactly sure what day the recent shooting occurred. Such an effort to compare the Kennedy assassination with the Pennsylvania shooting falls miserably.

He points out that Trump is proudly standing for our values. Does he know Trump? Does he understand Trump’s values or lack thereof. This is the time of the political season when the Republicans continue to remind us of their “family values”. They talk about Montana values and quickly imply that their party is the party of values.
This has been hard to justify in the Trump era. With Trump as their king, what specific values are they talking about? I have referred to him as the most reprehensible political candidate of our time. He has done more to divide the nation than anyone of recent or past memory. I have reached back in time to find an old and more precise word to define the former president. He could be the poster child of the word, “scoundrel.” Remember that word from the past that gave you a very descriptive understanding of what a person was like.
To call someone a scoundrel was to refer to them as unprincipled, dishonorable, dishonest, a person without moral principles who treats people badly. You hear the word “weird” of late to describe him and his vice president pick, but I think scoundrel seems to be a bit more fitting.
Kaltschmidt claims that Trump’s pick of Vance for a future vice-president is historic. He goes on to point out that Vance will be able to reach undecided voters on a personal level. He says he will be able to bring to the ticket the same inspiring and strong leadership” he brought to the senate.
I see his selection as being much like McCain’s pick of Palin. The only difference is that McCain was an honorable Republican belonging to a then honorable party back in 2008.
We Democrats miss the Republican Party of those days – there were honorable Republicans like Racicot, Martz, Brown and many others. We compare the new Republicans to the old, and they fall very short.
Daines, who believes strongly that the best Republican leader out there for America is Trump. And then he takes it upon himself to dig up Sheehy as the best candidate to run against Tester and the Republican leaders jump onboard.
If the guy picks Trump as the best person in the party to lead the nation, how can we expect him to do any better with his selection of Sheehy?
