BILLINGS — Former Billings West and San Diego State golfer Joey Moore recently made the transition to the professional level. He is set to compete in the DP World Tour Qualifying School in Italy in late August, as well as the Korn Ferry Tour Q-School.
MTN Sports’ Alec Bofinger had a chat with Moore, discussing the challenges of professional golf and the status of his game.
MTN Sports: “Welcome to Hilands Golf Club. Alec Bofinger here with 2023 State Am champion Joey Moore. Joey, you were noticeably absent from the 2024 edition in Laurel a few weeks back. Where were you? What have you been up to?”
Joey Moore: “I turned professional last September. My first tournament as a pro was the Gallatin Valley Open. Then I participated in qualifying school. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it through. This summer, I’ve been competing on the All Pro Tour, playing in events like the Colorado State Open and Texas State Open. I qualified for both of those. I’ve had a seasoned travel companion, Brooklyn Bailey, showing me the ropes.”
MTN: “You’ve been traveling to different states and soon to Europe. Why the trip to Italy?”
Moore: “I’ll be playing in the DP World Tour Q-School and the Korn Ferry Tour Q-School. I just played the Korn Ferry Tour Q-School last year, but I’m giving myself another shot this time.”
MTN: “As a professional, you’re paying entry fees to compete. Have you been able to make some money?”
Moore: “I’ve been managing decently. It was tough initially, but with the support of my family sponsor, I’ve been able to stay afloat. I’ve only missed two cuts this year, which is good. Now I just need to capitalize on my opportunities.”
MTN: “How’s your game looking at this stage of the year?”
Moore: “My game is feeling solid. My driver has been consistent, and my wedges are in good shape. I’ve found a putter that’s been working well for me in recent months. I’m feeling confident and ready to make the most of my game.”
MTN: “Best of luck, Joey. Hopefully, we’ll see you on CBS on a Sunday soon.”
Moore: “Fingers crossed. Thank you.”
