Michigan police are currently investigating a tragic incident where a 35-year-old man was shot and killed by his neighbor after a dispute over landscaping.
Canton police reported that Nathan Morris was out for a walk on Saturday morning when a confrontation with the suspect escalated into an argument about wood chips, leading to the fatal shooting.
Following the shooting, Morris was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Devereaux Christopher Johnson, barricaded himself inside his home after the incident before surrendering to law enforcement. He has since been charged with first-degree murder, firearms possession, and two counts of felony firearm charges.
Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh condemned the violence, expressing condolences to the victim’s family and neighbors who witnessed the tragic event.

It is noted that Morris had been serving as the secretary of Michigan’s 6th Congressional District Republican Committee. A post by Hima Kolanagireddy on the Michigan GOP’s X account remembered Morris as a beloved individual and family man.
Kolanagireddy recounted the sequence of events that led to Morris’ tragic death, highlighting his character and the devastating loss experienced by his loved ones.
Neighbors revealed that the suspect had a history of being confrontational and had previously made threats towards others in the neighborhood, causing concern among residents.

Edward McCall, a close family friend, expressed his disbelief and grief over Morris’ untimely passing, emphasizing his positive attributes and deep commitment to his family.
McCall initiated a fundraising effort to support Morris’ family, which has garnered significant contributions to aid them during this difficult time.
Johnson remains in custody pending further legal proceedings and evaluation of his mental state. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 23, subject to potential rescheduling.
