Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye is still in the running for the QB competition in New England, according to head coach Jerod Mayo’s statement on Friday. Mayo emphasized that there are three more days of training camp practices left and the coaches will continue to evaluate the quarterbacks. He mentioned that the competition is ongoing and not over yet. Initially, veteran Jacoby Brissett was leading the position at the start of training camp. Despite this, Mayo highlighted that both Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft, and Brissett have to prove themselves to their coaches and teammates. Mayo referenced Brissett’s recent end-zone interception against the Philadelphia Eagles as a “poor play” but reiterated that the competition is still open. Mayo emphasized that if Maye outperforms Brissett, he will earn the starting role for the team. Brissett, who has a 18-30 record as a starter in the NFL, will need to maintain his performance to secure the No. 1 spot. Maye, at 21 years old, will need to demonstrate more consistency to potentially overtake Brissett for the starting position before the Week 1 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. –Field Level Media
