The Thai king has officially appointed Paetongtarn Shinawatra as Thailand’s new prime minister. Paetongtarn, the 37-year-old daughter of controversial billionaire ex-premier Thaksin, is the kingdom’s youngest ever PM. Her appointment follows the dismissal of the previous premier and the disbandment of the main opposition party, leading to political turmoil in Thailand once again.
Being the third Shinawatra to hold the position of prime minister, Paetongtarn hopes to avoid the same fate as her father and aunt who were overthrown in military coups. She received King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s command to form a government at a ceremony held at the headquarters of a former pro-Thaksin TV station.
In her first address after the ceremony, Paetongtarn called for unity among Thais to help boost the country’s economy which has been struggling due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She expressed her willingness to work with all sectors including the cabinet, coalition, civil servants, private sector, and the people.
Thaksin, who was present at the ceremony, emphasized the importance of hard work and humility for his daughter. He expressed his confidence in Paetongtarn’s ability, noting her youth and willingness to seek help when needed.
Heading a coalition government led by her Pheu Thai party, Paetongtarn’s appointment came after the dismissal of the previous premier for ethics violations. Over the past two decades, Thailand has seen a power struggle between Thaksin’s allies and the conservative pro-military, pro-royalist elite.
Paetongtarn’s political journey started in late 2022 when she entered politics and eventually led her party to second place in the general elections. Despite facing obstacles, she managed to form a coalition government with pro-military parties.
– Controversial father –
Thaksin, known as a controversial and influential figure in Thai politics, faced exile and legal issues following his time as prime minister. Despite his absence, he remains a significant presence in the country’s political landscape.
Thaksin’s recent royal pardon has granted him freedom, raising questions about his potential role in his daughter’s government. However, he stated that he would not be taking an official advisory role, citing his age and health.
Thaksin’s populist policies during his time in office garnered support from rural communities but also drew criticism from the elites for alleged corruption and authoritarian practices. His return to Thailand last year coincided with his daughter’s appointment as prime minister.
As Paetongtarn takes on her new role, observers will closely monitor any signs of her father’s influence in her government. With Thaksin’s complex legacy and ongoing presence in Thai politics, the country’s political landscape remains uncertain.
