Thousands of activists are anticipated to gather in Chicago this week for the Democratic National Convention, focusing on issues such as abortion rights, economic inequality, and the conflict in Gaza.
While Vice President Kamala Harris is garnering support as she gears up to accept the Democratic nomination, progressive activists are staying true to their cause.
Having learned from the recent Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, activists are projecting larger crowds and more vigorous demonstrations in Chicago, a city with a rich history of social activism.
Who is protesting?
Daily demonstrations are expected throughout the convention, with many activists prioritizing an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The events commenced on Sunday with an abortion rights march along Michigan Avenue.
Organizer Linda Loew emphasized the international impact of reproductive rights and the need to redirect funds spent on warfare towards healthcare.
One of the largest groups, the Coalition to March on the DNC, plans demonstrations both at the start and end of the convention, anticipating a turnout of at least 20,000 activists, including students.
“The people with power will be in attendance,” said Liz Rathburn, a student organizer from the University of Illinois Chicago.
Where are they protesting?
Earlier this year, activists sued the city over restrictions on protest locations, leading to an agreement for demonstrations closer to the United Center, where the convention is being held.
Various groups, including the Poor People’s Army, will be conducting events and marches in different parts of the city to highlight issues of economic justice.
Despite Kamala Harris’s nomination, activists believe that policies have not yet shifted, with many continuing to advocate for social causes such as Palestinian rights and economic equality.
Is Chicago ready?
The city has made preparations for the influx of delegates, activists, and journalists, with tightened security measures and plans to manage traffic and public gatherings.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of peaceful protests and ensuring safety for all participants.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has expressed confidence in maintaining order during the convention.
