Jannik Sinner broke his losing streak against Alexander Zverev and secured a spot in the final of the Cincinnati Open with a 7-6 (11/9), 5-7, 7-6 (7/4) victory on Sunday.
Sinner had lost four out of five previous matchups against Zverev, with his only win dating back to Roland Garros four years ago.
The intense match lasted over three hours, including a break due to rain.
The match was paused during the first set tiebreaker for nearly 30 minutes due to rain, adding to the weather woes that have affected the event recently.
Sinner saved two set points from Zverev and clinched the first set on his third opportunity, but lost the second set after an early break and another break in the 12th game.
The third set went to a tiebreaker with Sinner taking a 5-2 lead and ultimately winning on his second match point.
“It was a tough and exciting match with changing conditions throughout the game,” said Sinner. “I’m pleased with my performance and excited to be in the final.”
Sinner, who last won a title on grass in Halle two months ago, will face either Frances Tiafoe or Danish 15th seed Holger Rune in the final, which is scheduled for Monday.
“I had to trust my instincts during the match, as that is my strength,” said the 23-year-old. “We had our highs and lows over three hours.”
Looking ahead to the US Open in eight days, Sinner emphasized the need to stay physically strong and maintain fitness.
“I need to be in better shape to win bigger matches. Today, I showed mental strength and I’m proud of that,” he added.
This will mark Sinner’s fifth career Masters 1000 final appearance.
