Dear Answer Angel: Ever since my teenage years, I’ve been a devoted follower of fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar, both in print and online. I’ve gained valuable insights into makeup trends, skincare, and the latest fashion trends.
However, over time, I’ve noticed that these magazines are increasingly showcasing and recommending products, clothes, and accessories that are beyond the reach of the average person. Why do they ignore the majority of us who can’t afford such luxury items? When they do feature items from more affordable stores, it feels like just a token mention, which shows a lack of consideration for regular people like us. – Celia G.
Dear Celia: There are two main reasons for this. Fashion magazines aim to be “aspirational,” providing dressing and product ideas from high-end designers to inspire us to try and replicate the looks, even if it means making a splurge here and there.
Secondly, advertising plays a significant role. Readers are bombarded with ads from luxury brands before reaching the editorial content, which often features products from those same brands. It’s up to us, as savvy consumers, to admire the looks but make informed decisions when making purchases.
