TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama has given general manager Courtney Morgan, a key behind-the-scenes staffer for Kalen DeBoer, a three-year contract worth nearly $2.5 million. This significant investment by one of the top football programs in the country highlights the trend of college teams increasingly operating like professional franchises.
The compensation committee of the university system’s board of trustees approved the deal on Tuesday for Morgan, who was DeBoer’s first hire in Tuscaloosa for his debut season as head coach. The contract is valued at an average of $825,000 annually, totaling $2.475 million.
This deal could establish a benchmark for what colleges pay personnel department leaders, a role that is expected to become more crucial as players receive direct compensation from schools. Many programs have already brought in GMs to handle name, image, and likeness compensation for athletes.
