KALISPELL — Three individuals were struck by lightning during a Glacier High School boy’s soccer practice on Monday night.
“Our boy’s soccer team was practicing yesterday afternoon when lightning hit in our area. The teams were taken off the field, and after monitoring the situation for over 30 minutes, they returned to the field,” said Glacier High School Activities Director Mark Dennehy. “Shortly after their return, lightning struck, injuring two athletes and a coach in some way.”
All three victims were taken to the hospital. One athlete and an assistant coach are responsive and still at Logan Health, while another athlete remains in the ICU.
The head coach Ryan Billiet initiated life-saving measures, including using an AED.
“Our coach started the procedures, followed by our trainer, and then emergency personnel from the police and fire department who did everything they could to help the young man,” said Dennehy.
Various teams were practicing at the time. Coaches were following the school’s storm protocol, which allows activities to resume 30 minutes after the lightning clears the area. However, another lightning strike occurred despite coaches monitoring the weather radars.
Dennehy emphasized the care and preparedness of the coaches for emergencies. Counseling services will be provided by the school for those affected by the incident. Soccer practice will resume, and coaches will be available to speak with the athletes.
The status of the coach and two athletes is currently undisclosed, but Dennehy remains hopeful for their recovery.
“We are grateful for the first responders and request the community’s prayers for our young people to recover,” said Dennehy.
Updates on the situation will be provided as they develop.
