HELENA — Six new homes are now available for East Helena residents in need after a dedication ceremony was conducted by Helena Area Habitat for Humanity.
The six homes are situated on Glenfinnan Court in East Helena and are part of the Mutual Self-Help program, where participants collaborate to construct their own homes.
Volunteers dedicated 5,000 hours over the past year, while the Mutual Self-Help home builders contributed 2,600 hours towards the completion of the homes.
A total of nineteen children will be relocating to the cul-de-sac, including Coral Storm’s kids.
Coral stated, “It’s ours. A new, fresh start. We can do whatever we want now.”
Another Mutual Self-Help homebuilder and mother, Katie Lockett, expressed, “It’s a bit emotional, but it feels good. It feels really good to have reached this point and to have a place to call home.”
These homes were funded by a grant from the Office of Rural Development (RD) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Additionally, the homes were made possible through generous grants from the Wall Family/Power Townsend Foundation, Valley Bank of Helena, and the Wells Fargo Foundation.
Some families commenced moving in right after the Thursday ceremony, and construction started last week for six additional Mutual Self-Help homes to be added to the cul-de-sac.
The Mutual Self-Help program currently has a waitlist of over 300 individuals.
