In Billings, Montana, the City is joining forces with “buckthorn slayers” to combat the invasive plant species known as buckthorn, as reported by the Montana Field Guide.
The City of Billings has received a $25,000 grant from the Montana Department of Agriculture to provide free buckthorn removal services for homeowners. The city has hired experts in eradication to handle appointments and clear properties.
The berries of the buckthorn plant are harmful to wildlife, acting as a laxative without offering real nutritional value. The plant spreads through its seeds, making ongoing removal efforts essential to prevent further spread, save money, and protect wildlife and the environment.
The method of removal varies depending on factors such as the size of the plant, its location, accessibility, weather conditions, and soil type. Fall is identified as the ideal season to tackle buckthorn as its leaves remain green while others change color or fall.
Following the removal, the Buckthorn Slayers will clear and transport the debris to a city-owned site for chipping. The cleared areas will then be replanted with grass to restore the landscape.
Homeowners can also seek reimbursement if they opt to invest in replacement shrubs. The maximum reimbursement per property is $100, provided with receipts and purchase documentation.
