MISSOULA — Fire danger is now classified as low, allowing for some outdoor burning in Missoula County.
Prescribed Wildland and Essential Agriculture Burning in Missoula County will be permitted starting on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. However, burning yard waste and piles is not allowed due to air quality concerns.
Prescribed wildland burning is conducted on forested or undeveloped rangeland to enhance habitat and range conditions, reduce logging slash, promote forest regeneration, and restore fire-resilient landscapes.
Essential agriculture burning takes place on farms or ranches to clear excess vegetation from cultivated fields and improve range and wildlife habitat.
Landowners falling under the Prescribed Wildland or Essential Agriculture categories must obtain a burn permit, which needs to be activated on the day of the burn.
Burn permits can be acquired at https://app.egovmt.com/burnpermit/ and must be activated for each day and location of burning.
Burning within Missoula City Limits is only allowed for owners of more than one acre of land. Click here for additional information on outdoor burning seasons and burn permits in Missoula County.
