The U.S. military-built pier in Gaza is up and running again after being detached for a second time last week due to rough seas, as reported by Cyprus officials on Thursday.
The pier, crucial for delivering humanitarian aid like supplies from the U.N.’s World Food Program into Gaza, has encountered several setbacks since its installation. It was only operational for about a week when it was destroyed by high winds in May and then removed again earlier this month.
Last week, the U.S. military detached the causeway to prevent it from breaking apart again, after it suffered damage from bad weather late last month.
Theodoris Gotsis, a spokesperson for the Cyprus Foreign Ministry, confirmed that both the pier and the causeway in Gaza are now operational. Over the last 40 days, Cyprus has screened and loaded around 10,000 tons of aid for Gaza onto boats.
Cyprus serves as the starting point of a maritime corridor to Gaza through which aid is shipped to the U.S.-built pier and causeway.
The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which has been ongoing for nine months, has resulted in over 37,100 deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The war has severely restricted the flow of food, medicine, and other essential supplies to Palestinians who are facing widespread hunger.
Israel initiated the war after Hamas’ attack on Oct. 7, where militants entered southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people, primarily civilians, and the abduction of approximately 250 individuals.
Currently:
– The fate of the latest cease-fire proposal depends on Netanyahu and Hamas’ leader in Gaza.
– A rare public disagreement has arisen between Israel’s political and military leadership regarding the conduct of the war in Gaza.
– The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group has cautioned Israel against a broader conflict.
– Hundreds of deaths occurred during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia due to intense heat, according to officials.
