Adult entertainment website Pornhub is set to become inaccessible to users in five additional states due to the introduction of age verification laws. In a recent blog post, the company announced that starting in July, access to the website will be blocked in Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, and Nebraska. This decision follows the blocking of seven other states over the past year, including Texas, Utah, Arkansas, Virginia, Montana, North Carolina, and Mississippi.
These laws, aimed at protecting minors from viewing adult content online, typically require users to provide a government-issued ID to verify their age before accessing the site. While well-intentioned, these laws have sparked controversy, especially in states that have labeled pornography as a public health crisis. As a result, websites like Pornhub are opting to restrict access to comply with regulations and avoid potential fines or legal consequences.
Pornhub also raised concerns about the privacy implications and increased risk of identity theft associated with age verification processes. By submitting personal information to adult websites, users may be vulnerable to data breaches and phishing scams. The company emphasized the importance of community protection and highlighted the lack of safety measures on other adult content sites.
While supporting the idea of age verification to enhance online safety, Pornhub emphasized the need for a more secure method that verifies age through the device’s operating system rather than through online platforms. The company urged its community to advocate for better solutions to uphold privacy rights and combat censorship.
“Don’t give up!” the blog post encouraged. “We must continue to advocate for the normalization of sexual expression and actively engage in important conversations to promote a safe and inclusive online environment.”
