Oklahoma football coach Brent Venables is set to receive a new six-year contract totaling nearly $50 million, as approved by the Oklahoma Board of Regents on Friday. The deal, reported by CBS Sports, has an average annual value of $8.275 million and will extend through the 2029 season.
Venables’ original contract, signed when he was hired before the 2022 season, was for six years and $43.5 million. Over the past two seasons, the Sooners have a record of 16-10, with a 6-7 record in 2022 and a 10-3 record last season, qualifying for bowl games both years but losing both.
Oklahoma marks Venables’ first head coaching position at 53 years old. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 1993, later holding positions at Oklahoma and Clemson. Venables won the Broyles Award in 2016 as the nation’s top assistant coach under Dabo Swinney at Clemson, where he was assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach before departing.
The Sooners are set to transition from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference this fall, starting their season on Aug. 30 against Temple and entering SEC play on Sept. 21 when they host Tennessee.
