[Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the Doctor Who Season 1 finale “Empire of Death.”]
After the Doctor Who Season 1 finale, “Empire of Death,” we finally learn who Ruby’s (Millie Gibson) mother is. However, the mystery surrounding Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson), Ruby’s neighbor who is familiar with the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and has made direct addresses to the camera, remains unresolved.
As Sutekh and his followers (Susan Twist and Genesis Lynea’s Harriet Arbinger) unleash his “dust of death” on the universe, chaos ensues. The Doctor and Mel (Bonnie Langford) manage to escape with Ruby into a Time Window where they discover a TARDIS made up of memories and bits of every past TARDIS. However, they also encounter the real TARDIS and Sutekh, who has been manipulating events behind the scenes all this time.
The Doctor confronts Sutekh, vowing to stop him and turn back death, but questions why he is being spared. Meanwhile, Ruby unknowingly plays a crucial role in deciphering Sutekh’s motives, leading to a tense confrontation that culminates in a climactic battle in the time vortex.
Through a series of revelations and sacrifices, including the identity of Ruby’s mother, Louise Allison Miller (Faye McKeever), the Doctor and Ruby ultimately triumph over Sutekh, restoring life to those affected by his actions. Despite the bittersweet parting between Ruby and the Doctor, the episode ends on a note of hope and anticipation for future adventures.
