[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the Doctor Who Season 1 finale “Empire of Death.”]
Following the Doctor Who Season 1 finale, “Empire of Death,” we now know the identity of Ruby’s (Millie Gibson) mother. However, the mystery surrounding Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson), Ruby’s neighbor with knowledge about the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), remains unanswered.
Sutekh and his followers unleash his “dust of death” across the universe, resulting in the deaths of several characters including Kate (Jemma Redgrave), Rose (Yasmin Finney), Carla (Michelle Greenidge), Cherry (Angelya Wynter), and Mrs. Flood. The Doctor, along with Mel (Bonnie Langford), escape to the Time Window with Ruby where they encounter Sutekh and the real TARDIS. Sutekh reveals his plan to unleash death using Ruby’s secret.
The Doctor, Ruby, and Mel use the TARDIS’s perception filter to uncover clues about Ruby’s mother. As they travel to 2046, Sutekh takes control of Mel. However, with Ruby’s blood introduced into the system, they manage to defeat Sutekh and restore the lives of those affected by the dust of death. The Doctor acknowledges the sacrifices made and prepares to face Sutekh.
The episode concludes with Ruby reuniting with her mother, Louise Allison Miller, and embarking on a new journey. The Doctor bids farewell to Ruby, acknowledging the impact she has had on his life. The identity of Ruby’s mother is revealed, bringing closure to Ruby’s story arc.
Now, Season 2 introduces a new companion for the Doctor, played by Varada Sethu. Despite the resolution of Ruby’s mother’s mystery, the storyline offers an emotional payoff for Ruby and sets the stage for future adventures with the Doctor.
