Derrick Olsen’s journey to the Olympic games was unexpected. As a Helena High graduate and Montana State alum, Olsen initially pursued football. However, after transitioning to track and field, he will now compete in the 110-meter hurdles at the Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Olsen reflected on his path, stating, “10 years ago I would have thought I was still playing football. Every little kid’s dream is to go to the league (NFL) but we switched it up and it ended up working out better.”

Qualifying for the Olympic trials with a personal-best time of 13.60 seconds, Olsen expressed his excitement, calling it a pivotal moment in his professional career.
Despite the challenges of self-funding his training and travel expenses, Olsen remains dedicated to his pursuit of success in track and field.
