Authorities reported that three individuals lost their lives in a tragic mass shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas on Friday.
Fordyce is situated approximately 70 miles south of Little Rock, the state’s capital.
Arkansas State Police confirmed that at least 10 civilians were wounded, in addition to two law enforcement officers who confronted the suspect.
The injured civilians are said to have varying degrees of severity in their injuries, from critical to non-life-threatening. The two officers who were shot are expected to recover from their injuries, as per the police statement.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the shooting took place inside or outside the store.
The suspected shooter sustained injuries during the exchange of fire with law enforcement, but they are not life-threatening and are currently in custody. The identified perpetrator is 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey from New Edinburg, facing three counts of capital murder with additional charges pending. The motive behind the incident remains unknown.
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee-Sanders expressed gratitude towards first responders for their swift response, stating, “I am thankful to law enforcement and first responders for their quick and heroic action to save lives. My prayers are with the victims and all those impacted by this horrific incident.”
White House Spokesperson Jeremy M. Edwards confirmed that federal law enforcement is aiding in the investigation. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and will continue to receive updates, according to White House representatives.
