Former President Donald Trump has announced that he has chosen his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
During a campaign stop in Philadelphia, Trump revealed to a reporter that he has made his decision on his vice presidential pick, keeping the identity of the individual undisclosed. He hinted that the chosen person will likely be present at CNN’s presidential debate on Thursday.
Trump intends to officially disclose his VP selection around the time of the Republican National Convention, scheduled to take place from July 15th to July 18th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Among those on Trump’s short list for vice president, aside from Ben Carson, are several elected Republicans including:
- Sen. J.D. Vance – Ohio
- Rep. Elise Stefanik – New York
- Gov. Doug Burgum – North Dakota
- Sen. Marco Rubio – Florida
- Sen. Tim Scott – South Carolina
- Sen. Tom Cotton – Arkansas
- Rep. Byron Donalds – Florida
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who endorsed Trump early last fall, was also previously mentioned as a potential running mate by Trump.
Trump emphasizes that the most important quality in a running mate is someone who can step in as president if needed. If Trump secures victory this year, his VP choice is likely to be a strong contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028, as Trump would be constitutionally prohibited by the 22nd Amendment from seeking another term as president.
