Former President Donald Trump has announced that he has chosen his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
While speaking at a campaign stop in Philadelphia, Trump revealed that he has made his decision on his vice presidential pick. He stated that his choice is currently unknown to the public and hinted that the person will likely be present at CNN’s presidential debate on Thursday.
Trump intends to officially announce his VP selection around the time of the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to take place from July 15th to July 18th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
With the exception of former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, the individuals on Trump’s shortlist for vice president are all elected Republicans. They include:
- Sen. J.D. Vance – Ohio
- Rep. Elise Stefanik – New York
- Gov. Doug Burgum – North Dakota
- Sen. Marco Rubio – Florida
- Sen. Tim Scott – South Carolina
- Sen. Tom Cotton – Arkansas
- Rep. Byron Donalds – Florida
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem was previously mentioned by Trump as a potential running mate, and she endorsed Trump early last fall.
Trump emphasized that the most important quality in a running mate is someone who is capable of assuming the role of president. Should Trump win the election in 2024, his VP pick would likely be considered a strong candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028, as Trump would be prohibited from serving as president again under the 22nd Amendment.
