Duncan Hamilton competed in his second U.S. Olympic Trials men’s steeplechase final Sunday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Hamilton, who grew up in Bozeman and competed for Montana State, finished sixth overall by running 8 minutes, 29.2 seconds to improve on his 14th-place finish in 2021.
Kenneth Rooks won the race in 8:21.92 followed by Matthew Wilkinson in 8:23.0 and BYU’s James Corrigan in 8:26.78 in third. However, none of the top three finishers hold the Olympic qualifying standard of 8:15.0 from this season so they will wait for confirmation from World Athletics to officially set the field for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In a race that went out relatively slow initially, there were four different leaders until Rooks, who won the 2023 NCAA championship over Hamilton, took charge and built a gap over the front of the pack over the final two laps to pull away for the top place.
