SUNRISE, Fla. — The Florida Panthers have clinched their first Stanley Cup championship after a challenging journey to the title.
Goals from Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe, along with 23 saves by Sergei Bobrovsky, led the Panthers to a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. This victory marked their first championship in the franchise’s 30-year history, overcoming previous title-round losses in 1996 and 2021.
After winning the first three games of the series, the Panthers faced a tough challenge as they lost the next three matches. Needing a win in Game 7 to avoid a historic collapse, the team rose to the occasion and secured the title, avoiding a fate similar to the 1942 Detroit Red Wings.
Coach Paul Maurice expressed his joy, stating, “It’s so much better than I thought it would be.”

After the win, Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov shared, “It’s heavy,” referring to the Stanley Cup, symbolizing the team’s achievement. The players celebrated the victory, denying Connor McDavid and the Oilers a chance at the title.
McDavid was named the Conn Smythe winner as the playoffs MVP, but the ultimate prize went to the Panthers as they lifted the coveted Cup.
Reflecting on the victory, forward Matthew Tkachuk commented, “It’s not a dream anymore. It’s reality. I can’t believe how good these two years have been. So thankful for this group of guys. It’s the best place, best guys. It’s something really special here with what we have.”
Despite a goal from Mattias Janmark for the Oilers, Stuart Skinner’s 19 saves were not enough to secure the Cup for Edmonton, extending Canada’s championship drought.
With this victory, South Florida now boasts titles from all major U.S. professional sports leagues, adding the Stanley Cup to their collection alongside the Miami Dolphins, Marlins, and Heat championships.
The Panthers’ long-awaited moment with the Cup was a surreal experience for the team and fans alike, marking a historic achievement for the franchise.
Veteran Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad summed up the victory by saying, “This is the best moment of my life so far. Nothing tops it.”
