Hooters has announced the closure of “underperforming” locations in various states due to current market conditions. The company did not provide a list of the affected restaurants, but closures have been reported in Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Rhode Island, Texas, and Virginia in recent weeks.
According to a statement to Scripps News, Hooters stated, “Like many restaurants facing challenges from market conditions, we have made the tough choice to close a number of underperforming stores. The well-being of our staff is our top priority in these situations.”
Despite the closures, Hooters is also opening new locations in the U.S. and overseas. The company believes that this expansion, along with the introduction of Hooters frozen food products in grocery stores, demonstrates the brand’s ongoing strength and relevance.

Known for its chicken wings and iconic “Hooters Girls,” Hooters has faced criticism for its traditional beauty standards and sex appeal. Despite initiatives like the Hooters Girl calendar and beauty pageant, the company has struggled to stay relevant in modern culture. In 2021, the brand faced backlash for new uniform designs that some likened to underwear.
Hooters later allowed employees to choose between the new and original uniforms.
