The Biden administration is set to announce pardons for U.S. veterans who were convicted under military rules that banned gay sex, CNN reported on Tuesday.
The pardons are expected to be announced on Wednesday and will impact veterans who were convicted under the Uniform Code of Military Justice Article 125. This rule prohibited sodomy and attempted sodomy from 1951 to 2013, when Congress repealed the law.
Individuals who engaged in nonconsensual acts, such as rape, will not be eligible for a pardon.
Approximately 2,000 individuals convicted under this law had their military benefits suspended. A pardon would enable them to seek reinstatement of these benefits.
Those who receive a pardon can also seek to correct their discharge status through the board of corrections for their respective military branch, as reported by CNN.
