Nearly 70% of Americans who are considering moving abroad express a desire for adventure and personal growth. Additionally, almost half of them mention a need for more or different freedoms.
An annual survey conducted by expatriate resource specialist Expatsi has revealed these insights after extensive data collection over multiple years. The main objective of the company is to assist Americans in finding a new home abroad and provide solutions based on their financial, weather, and cultural preferences.
The findings also highlight that Americans are primarily leaving the country due to political reasons such as same-sex relationships and abortion rights. This contrasts with the top political concerns of the average American, as reported by Statista, which include inflation, healthcare, and immigration.
Seeking Liberal Values
Between 55% and 60% of respondents expressed a desire for liberal values in their new home country. While this may seem common in certain areas outside of America, it raises questions about the alignment of values with potential living destinations.
Same-Sex Relationships
The survey shows that only a few countries across the world have legalized same-sex marriages. Most European nations have adopted these laws, but many countries in Eastern Europe still do not recognize this right. The Pew Research Center reports that Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and South Africa are among the countries that endorse legal same-sex relationships.
Challenges Ahead
Despite global progress towards accepting same-sex relationships, there are still at least 67 countries that criminalize such practices. The majority of these countries are located in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean, with the United Arab Emirates being a notable exception among common expatriate destinations.
Abortion Rights
Abortion laws vary greatly across the world, with some countries imposing strict regulations. While the procedure is mostly legal, there are 16 countries where abortion is completely banned, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights.
Europe’s Stand
European countries mostly offer full legal protections for abortion rights, making them attractive destinations for those seeking reproductive autonomy. However, regions in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia have limited access to abortion services.
Considerations for Expatriates
As expatriates evaluate their relocation options, budgetary concerns often play a crucial role in decision-making. The research indicates that a significant portion of respondents are looking for affordable living costs while considering factors such as visa requirements and job opportunities in their new countries.
Recommended Destinations
Portugal and Spain have emerged as popular choices for American expatriates seeking a balance of affordability and cultural acceptance. These countries offer access to services like abortion and same-sex marriage, making them appealing options for those looking to build a new life abroad.
For Americans seeking a frugal and liberated lifestyle, exploring opportunities in Southwestern Europe may be a promising starting point.
