Volkswagen has announced a recall affecting over 271,000 SUVs due to concerns about their passenger air bags potentially not deploying in the event of a collision.
The recall pertains to specific Atlas vehicles from model years 2021 to 2024, as well as certain Atlas Cross Sport models produced from 2020 to 2024.
According to information filed by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, a defect in the detectors could prevent the air bag from activating if a passenger is seated in the front seat.
Volkswagen will rectify the issue by replacing the defective components at no charge, as outlined in the NHTSA notification. Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification by mail no later than August 16, 2024.
Reports indicate that Volkswagen has received approximately 1,730 warranty claims related to the airbag malfunction.

An earlier recall in 2023 involved an additional 143,000 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models, including some manufactured as early as 2018, which were affected by the same flawed passenger detection system that could deactivate the air bag.
