Germany emerged victorious over Denmark with a 2-0 win in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, amidst a storm-interrupted game. Italy, the reigning champions, were eliminated by Switzerland in the same competition.
The match in Dortmund saw two second-half goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala secure Germany’s win after a 25-minute storm delay during the first half. The storm brought torrential rain, hailstones, high winds, thunder, and lightning, causing chaos at the stadium.
Despite an early disallowed goal, Germany continued to pressure the Danish goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel. Havertz scored from a penalty in the 53rd minute, followed by Musiala’s goal in the second half.
Germany’s coach, Julian Nagelsmann, described the game as “bizarre” and praised his team’s resilience against the challenges they faced.
Italy’s title defence ended with a 2-0 loss to Switzerland, who will face England or Slovakia in the next round. Italy’s captain, Gianluigi Donnarumma, expressed disappointment in their performance.
The Euro 2024 continues with more matches on Sunday, including England against Slovakia and Spain against Georgia.
