Uber has announced its One Less Car Challenge where it plans to give 175 people $1,000 to temporarily ditch their cars for five weeks. The only requirement is that participants must be car owners in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Miami, San Francisco, Toronto, or Vancouver.
As part of the challenge, Uber will provide $1,000 for participants to explore alternative forms of transportation such as public transportation, rideshares, and electric bicycles. $500 of the fund will be allocated as Uber Cash, usable for Uber Rides and Lime e-bikes and e-scooters. Additionally, Uber will offer $200 in Uber car rental products and $300 for other transportation modes like public transit.

The challenge will take place from July 22 to Aug. 25. Participants will be asked to document their experiences during the trial, highlighting the transportation alternatives they choose and the impact of embracing a car-light lifestyle on their daily routines.
“With nearly 233 million private vehicles on U.S. roads, 80 million of which are driven less than 10 miles a day on average, we aim to demonstrate that transitioning to a car-light lifestyle is feasible, saving costs and reducing emissions while contributing to the creation of more sustainable cities,” Uber stated.
