In just one month since its release, “Inside Out 2” has surpassed $1 billion in global box office earnings, making it the fastest animated film to achieve this milestone, as reported by The Walt Disney Company.
This star-studded sequel has become the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, but faces stiff competition this Fourth of July weekend from another animated franchise film.
“Of course, ‘Despicable Me’ is set to premiere soon,” noted film critic Victor Aragon. “‘Inside Out’ is fantastic as well. However, considering the high ticket prices, great alternatives to watch at home on Netflix would be ‘Ultraman Rising’ and ‘Thelma The Unicorn.’
Aragon, who co-created the family entertainment blog FanDads, is now not only concerned about a film’s content but also the cost of taking the whole family to the theater.
The average movie ticket price in the U.S. has now risen to $10.78, and in cities like Chicago, where Aragon resides, a trip to the movies can cost $20 per person.
“Movies are becoming available for home streaming much quicker now,” mentioned Aragon. “If you miss seeing a film in the first two weeks, you can simply wait another week and watch it at home for a fraction of the cost.”
Streaming options are not yet available for films like “Inside Out 2,” and Aragon believes that word of mouth will continue to drive audiences to theaters to see it. For older audiences and families with teenagers seeking entertainment this Fourth of July, Aragon suggests a more thrilling option.
“‘A Quiet Place’ could also be a great choice for the whole family,” Aragon recommended, “It is rated PG-13, so it may not be too scary. Those who have watched ‘Stranger Things’ might be accustomed to what they’ll see in this film.”
The horror prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One” debuted at the end of June with earnings of $52 million in the U.S. and Canada. Although it did not surpass “Inside Out 2” in the box office rankings, this could change as “Despicable Me 4” is anticipated to earn over $125 million upon its release on July 3.
