Appraisers with the Montana Department of Revenue will be conducting on-site reviews of properties in Yellowstone County this month.
The Billings Police Department has received calls from residents concerned about appraisers trespassing on their property, said Sgt. Jeff Stovall.
State law allows revenue department employees to come onto private property for evaluation purposes.
“They do have a right to do that and it’s not considered trespassing,” Stovall said.
He said appraisers usually knock on the door before starting their evaluation. They typically wear fluorescent yellow vests and drive state vehicles with Department of Revenue markings on them. They also carry proper identification when they conduct inspections of a property, Stovall said.
