Xcel Energy Colorado officials submitted an updated wildfire mitigation plan to state regulators on Thursday to enhance response to wildfire threats across the state. This action comes after an investigation by the Colorado Utilities Commission was launched due to the company’s decision to cut off power to over 50,000 customers before a severe windstorm in April.
The revised wildfire mitigation plan, set to take effect in 2025 and extend through 2027, was announced by Xcel Energy Colorado President Robert Kenney. Kenney described the plan as a significant advancement in the company’s efforts to safeguard the public from wildfires in the state.
Kenney highlighted the evolving nature of wildfires, driven significantly by climate change, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures to prevent wildfires year-round. The updated plan aims to empower Xcel Energy to make informed decisions regarding wildfire mitigation and strengthen the resilience of their system.

Additionally, the plan includes enhanced power-line safety settings and proactive de-energization/shut offs. These measures, which sparked criticism from customers in certain areas, are part of Xcel’s commitment to public safety amid wildfire threats.
Following the power shutoffs, which triggered an investigation directed by Gov. Jared Polis, Xcel Energy faced scrutiny and legal action related to wildfire incidents. Despite allegations linking the company to destructive fires, Xcel Energy maintains that their equipment did not ignite the fires.
The company’s efforts include more weather stations, advanced technologies like AI and cameras for monitoring wildfires, and infrastructure upgrades to enhance safety. Kenney reassured customers that the mitigation plan prioritizes public safety and addresses the growing challenge of wildfires.
Approval and implementation of the plan, which may lead to a modest increase in residential bills, are expected to take 12 to 18 months. Xcel Energy remains committed to protecting the public and combating wildfires through proactive measures.
