YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — An armed individual who was making threatening gestures at Yellowstone National Park has passed away, and a park ranger was injured after an exchange of gunfire on Thursday, according to authorities.
The incident took place at Canyon Village, a location in the central area of the park that includes a campground, lodging, and visitor center, after rangers were alerted to a report of someone making threats, as per a statement from park officials. The statement did not specify the exact location of the shots fired or whether visitors were affected by what was described as “a significant law enforcement incident” that began overnight.
The ranger is in stable condition at a hospital, according to the statement, which did not detail how the ranger sustained injuries.
The identity of the deceased individual has not been disclosed.
The FBI is assisting the National Park Service in investigating the shooting, but the agency declined to provide further details.
