On the Fourth of July, a day historically known for being one of the deadliest days of the year in the United States, several tragic incidents took place. Two women were killed in a home in Chicago, a police officer serving a warrant in Cleveland lost his life, and an armed individual making threats in Yellowstone National Park was also among those who died in shootings.
Summer months often see an increase in violence and mass shootings, as more people gather for social events, schools are out, and temperatures rise. This year, three boys aged 8, 7, and 5 were also injured in the Chicago shooting, which was said to stem from a personal dispute. The victims were a 42-year-old woman and a 22-year-old woman.
In Chicago, multiple individuals arrived in two vehicles in a residential area and opened fire on a home, leading to the tragic incident. A mixture of shell casings from a rifle and a handgun were found at the scene, according to Deputy Chief Don Jerome.
In Cleveland, officer Jamieson Ritter was fatally shot while trying to serve a warrant for felonious assault. The suspect fled the scene and reportedly fired multiple shots, hitting the officer.
Meanwhile, at Yellowstone National Park, gunfire erupted between a person making threats and park rangers. The incident took place at Canyon Village, resulting in a significant law enforcement response and leaving a ranger injured.
Last year, a series of shootings around the Fourth of July left dozens dead and wounded. Just two years ago, a mass shooting at a parade near Chicago claimed the lives of seven individuals.
