DETROIT — When Michigan quarterback Alex Orji was in high school in Texas, he faced suggestions to switch positions instead of pursuing his passion for playing quarterback, despite not having received any college scholarship offers at that time.
“All the time,” Orji recalled before co-hosting a youth quarterback camp in Detroit with Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles last Sunday.
Standing at 6-foot-3, 236 pounds, Orji’s size and athleticism led many to believe he would excel at a different position in college. However, he persisted in pursuing his dream of being a quarterback. Now, as J.J. McCarthy has moved on to the NFL, Orji finds himself in contention for the starting quarterback position at Michigan this fall. He credits his determination in high school and the unwavering support of his family and coaches for this opportunity.
