Russian missiles caused the deaths of at least seven people and hit a children’s hospital in Kyiv, Ukraine on Monday. Another attack in Kryvyi Rih resulted in at least 10 deaths.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Russian attack targeted five Ukrainian cities with over 40 missiles, damaging apartment buildings and public infrastructure.
The Interior Minister reported that at least 20 people were killed and around 50 were injured in the attacks across the country. In Kryvyi Rih, there were 10 deaths and 31 injuries from what the city administration described as a massive missile attack.
At the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, rescuers were looking for survivors under the collapsed wing of the building, though the exact number of casualties was not yet confirmed.
Zelenskyy urged the world not to remain silent about the situation and to see the actions of Russia for what they are.
The attack occurred just before a NATO summit in Washington, where support for Ukraine will be discussed amidst hopes of resolving the conflict.
The children’s hospital suffered significant damage, with a two-story building partly destroyed and the main building showing signs of impact.
Rescue efforts were underway with volunteers and medical personnel searching for survivors amidst the rubble. The Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, used in the attack, caused severe destruction in Kyiv.
The city administration reported fires and falling debris in several areas of Kyiv, with heavy smoke rising from affected neighborhoods.
Officials were still assessing the extent of the damage caused by the attack in Kyiv, which occurred while many people were out in the streets.
