Scripps News interviewed 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang on Monday regarding the Democratic response to President Joe Biden’s recent statements about remaining in the race.
“President Biden is different in 2024 compared to 2020,” Yang commented. “I debated him seven times in 2020, and the Joe Biden I knew back then would not have delivered the kind of performance he did last Thursday in front of 50 million Americans. There are noticeable changes in Joe Biden now compared to just a few years ago, which is why we’re discussing this today.”
Yang expressed disappointment that there wasn’t a more competitive primary process this election cycle.
“If there had been televised debates between Joe Biden, Dean Phillips, Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, and others, the political landscape would be very different,” Yang stated. “A genuine process would have led to a completely different outcome.”
Yang hinted at Democrats planning to challenge President Biden more directly, although he didn’t provide specifics.
“I know that some individuals who publicly express hesitance are actually preparing for a campaign,” Yang revealed. “I’ve been informed that at least one Democratic member is planning to announce their candidacy this week. There are a lot of activities happening behind the scenes.”
