Inflation has affected almost every aspect of the average American’s life — including our spending habits. However, one place where its impact is particularly noticeable is at the grocery store.
If you’ve noticed an increase in your grocery bill, you’re not alone. Food inflation has risen by 26.3% since 2019, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. With the average American family visiting the supermarket more than 1 1/2 times per week, as per Statistica data, these costs can quickly add up.
As a result, consumers are now actively seeking better deals and savings, and Brian Vines, Deputy Editor of Special Projects at Consumer Reports, recently shared his expert advice on how to achieve this. One of his top tips is to consider purchasing private-label products.

Private-label products are those that are sold under the store’s brand but are often comparable to, if not better than, national brands. Despite the higher visibility of the national brand due to extensive advertising, Vines suggests that shoppers can save around 25% by opting for the store’s private-label alternative.
Additionally, private-label products may come with money-back guarantees that are not typically offered by some national brands. This ensures that consumers won’t waste money on products they are dissatisfied with.
Another money-saving tip shared by Vines is to utilize your smartphone while shopping at the supermarket. This includes checking for digital coupons, comparing prices at different stores, and enrolling in loyalty programs.
