CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A woman in Yellowstone National Park reported being held at gunpoint by a man who threatened a mass shooting, an uncommon occurrence in the region. Rangers immediately began searching for the gunman, who later appeared outside a dining area and opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle. The rangers returned fire, ultimately killing the attacker, identified as Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, 28, of Milton, Florida.
The details of the incident, provided by park officials, highlighted a tense situation that ended with the attacker being neutralized. Questions remain about Fussner’s motives, as his social media posts did not indicate any potential for violence.
While Yellowstone is known for wildlife incidents and natural hazards, shootings are extremely rare in the park. The wounded ranger has been discharged from the hospital, and authorities temporarily closed off the affected area for investigation.
Law enforcement rangers responded swiftly to the threat and successfully prevented further harm to visitors and staff. The FBI is conducting an investigation, and park regulations require rangers involved in shootings to be placed on administrative leave during the inquiry.
